Carpenter was the daughter of Christine Carpenter who was a bird sanctuary worker, as well as Don Carpenter (a salesman), and was born in Las Vegas. Carpenter is of Spanish, French, and German descendance (from her maternal grandfather). Carpenter attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas;[6] she was also a member of a troupe of song and dance that was a part of the Las Vegas Valley when she was just nine years old.

Carpenter, then 15, and her family moved with her family to Rosarito Beach in Baja California, Mexico [2] and then to San Diego, California. She went to Bonita Vista High School and Chula Vista School of the Creative and Performing Arts. 2] [failed verification] Following her graduation, Carpenter traveled throughout Europe. Carpenter returned to San Diego in 1991 and worked as an aerobics instructor and videostore clerk and property manager. In 1991, she played cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers. In 1992, she relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles.

While swimming in San Diego in 1991, she and two male acquaintances were attacked by Henry Hubbard Jr., an ex- San Diego police officer and serial rapist who tried to subdue them using a gun. During the struggle that ensued, her two friends and Hubbard were killed, forcing him to flee the scene but both were able to escape the assault. Hubbard was found guilty and sentenced to 56 year prison term for a series of rapes, robberies. Carpenter brought Hubbard his flashlight from the police station on the beach. This flashlight proved to be crucial evidence in the case against Hubbard.

Carpenter was listed as No. 31 on the AskMen's top 99 Most Wanted Women 2002[30] and No. 44 on their 2005 list. Carpenter claimed that she didn't think of herself as a sex icon however she does consider herself a sex symbol. Carpenter was in the cover story as well as in a 10 page nude photograph in the June 2004 issue. People magazine asked her 2005 to pose for Playboy. Playboy was something I did for a very specific purpose. Playboy was not just an excellent financial choice, but also a good fit for my current life circumstance. I'd just had my baby and had gained over 50 pounds during pregnancy. I wanted to look like my former self. I wanted to feel attractive and sexy. I was thinking, "What if I went all out?"
